“One fast move or I’m gone.” Jack Kerouac writes these words multiple times in his novel Big Sur as he begins to suffer from delirium tremens (the medical condition, not the delicious beer). I’m about 1/3 of the way into the book and I’m really enjoying it.
I decided to read the book after hearing the music above, which is sort of a soundtrack for the documentary that looks at the events which inspired Kerouac’s Big Sur. Jay Farrar (of Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) and Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, Zooey Deschanel) do the soundtrack. I’ve always liked both these guys so it was no surprise that I loved that album. Hoping to buy it on vinyl soon with the included DVD of the documentary.
I didn’t post about an album last week because I ended up going on a few job interviews in Colorado! I think they both went well so hopefully I will be moving some time soon. One can hope!
The guys at Suburban Home recently adopted a band I really like, Have Gun, Will Travel and have posted their new album Postcards from the Friendly City for full streaming on their website. The album is great from start to finish. A lot of it has a slow, dreary feel that I really like. They kind of remind me of The Builders and the Butchers at times, which isn’t a bad thing.
Hopefully I’ll do one of these every week.
Originally released in 1995, Lead Me On was Kelly Joe Phelps breakout debut. Playing a mixture of delta blues and jazz on the slide guitar, many of these songs were inspired by the birth of Phelp’s daughter. A perfect album to enjoy while relaxing with a cold drink.
Hmmm, it would seem I have neglected this blog toward the later half of the year. I don’t really have a good reason, it just happened. So, in order to correct this I am going to do one of those New Year’s resolution things and resolve to update this page more frequently. Wish me the best.
To that end, I’m going to start off by posting some of my favorite music from 2009. As a disclaimer, I have to say that that much of my music listening this year involved a sort of fetish for Suburban Home Records. I’ve written about them before and just have too many good things to say to list here. Besides that, a lot of my listening habits have changed as I spend the majority of my time at work in front of a computer. I’ve found myself more often than not listening to albums online using lala, npr, or orb. So, in no specific order, here it is, my top 20 list:
I And Love And You by The Avett Brothers
Something’s Wrong/Lost Forever by Scott H. Biram
Be Set Free by Langhorne Slim
Strict Joy by The Swell Season
One Fast Move Or I’m Gone Music From Kerouac’s Big Sur by Benjamin Gibbard, Jay Farrar
1372 Overton Park by Lucero
All You Can Eat!! by Left Lane Cruiser

For those interested, you can stream most of these albums online using my lala blog. Just do a search for the artist and/or album in the upper right-hand corner. Happy Holidays!
