One Fast Move Or I'm Gone: Music From Kerouac's...
“One fast move or I’m gone.” Jack Kerouac writes these words multiple times in his novel Big Sur as he begins to suffer from delirium tremens (the medical condition, not the delicious beer). I’m about 1/3 of the way into the book and I’m really enjoying it. I decided to read the book after hearing the music above, which is sort of a soundtrack for the documentary...

Postcards from the Friendly City by Have Gun Will...
I didn’t post about an album last week because I ended up going on a few job interviews in Colorado! I think they both went well so hopefully I will be moving some time soon. One can hope! The guys at Suburban Home recently adopted a band I really like, Have Gun, Will Travel and have posted their new album Postcards from the Friendly City for full streaming on their website. The album is...

Lead Me On by Kelly Joe Phelps
Hopefully I’ll do one of these every week. Originally released in 1995, Lead Me On was Kelly Joe Phelps breakout debut. Playing a mixture of delta blues and jazz on the slide guitar, many of these songs were inspired by the birth of Phelp’s daughter. A perfect album to enjoy while relaxing with a cold drink.

Favorite Music of 2009
Hmmm, it would seem I have neglected this blog toward the later half of the year. I don’t really have a good reason, it just happened. So, in order to correct this I am going to do one of those New Year’s resolution things and resolve to update this page more frequently. Wish me the best. To that end, I’m going to start off by posting some of my favorite music from 2009. As a...

1372 Overton Park by Lucero
Everyone needs to do themselves a favor and listen to this album. A lot of Lucero fans have been torn about the addition of horns (and backup singers!), but I personally love it. Rock on. P.S. Thanks Melinda for getting me a vinyl copy of this! Flown all the way from Colorado!

Wood iPhone case
This would be totally badass to have. Especially if I got it engraved. Or maybe a sweet moleskin cover? The black is quite sexy. Check out Engrave Your Tech for some other cool stuff.

I’m listening to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness right now. How can such an amazing album come from a band that now sucks so bad. It makes me sick. Anyone else feel this way about other albums?

Something's Wrong/Lost Forever by Scott H. Biram
I’ve been looking forward to this album more than any other this year. I am not disappointed. In unrelated news, I brewed my own beer over the weekend with a couple friends. A Nut Brown Ale from Austin Homebrew Supply. I think it went well considering there were no “oh shit” moments. Expect pictures soon.

American Beer
I watched this documentary called American Beer last night. It was educational, funny, and inspirational. I especially enjoyed this guy from Bell’s quoting a poem by Charles Baudelaire: Get Drunk! by Charles Baudelaire One should always be drunk. That’s all that matters; that’s our one imperative need. So as not to feel Time’s horrible burden one which breaks your...

Blitzen Trapper
Their most recent album came out in 2008 and I never really gave it a listen. Man was I missing out. Check out this video of Black River Killer over at LaundroMatinee. These guys are playing the NPR Day Party at SXSW. Hope I’m able to catch them.

Pictures Galore
May as well just call this a megapost. 1.) Melinda and I went to see Broken Social Scene last month at the newly renovated Bass Concert Hall on campus. I actually got to do a tour of Bass a couple days before the concert for my Architectual Acoustics class. I’m not sure exactly how the place looked before renovations, but I really liked the new design. They’ve also got a number of...

Saffron Shrimp Soup
Made this recipe last night and it was delicious. Replaced the tubettini with white rice and the chives with scallions. Also flipped the ratio of chicken broth to fish stock and added a healthy amount of white pepper. Delicious! Highly recommended if you like paella but don’t want to go through all the work. Served with a french baguette.

Chili!
Wow, it’s been almost a month since my last post. Things have been pretty busy since coming back to Austin. A couple friends visited for about a week around New Year’s Eve, my sister visited a week later, and another friend visited the next week. Everyone trying to escape the cold in Chicago I suppose. I also flew out to Boston for a couple days for another interview at MIT Lincoln...

Back to Austin
Well, Christmas is over. I got a pretty cool vintage style camera shown above, the Lomography Diana F+. It uses medium-format 120mm film. It didn’t come with a flash, but I’m not sure if I even want one. Could be a possible future upgrade. I got some black and white film with it and took a few pics outside yesterday. I’m sure I’ll be taking a lot more when I get back to...

A White, Arctic Christmas
It’s currently 25 degrees and snowing outside. This is warm. Sunday it was a low of -3 degrees with around -30 degree windchills. I had the bright idea to go skiing that day. Add in the fact that you’re flying down a hill and it feels like it’s -50 degrees out. Frost formed on my mask because of the steam from my breath. Oh well, skiing was still a fun time even if I did almost...

'Tis the Season
Phew. Busy weekend. Friday Melinda and I had a Winter and Christmas beer Potluck party. It was quite the success, with nearly every Christmas beer I could think of in attendance. Click on the image above and you’ll find some pictures of what was leftover. Thanks to everyone who came. Last night I went to a Tacky Christmas sweater party. Everyone had a great time and I think we looked...

Outsourced
I watched the movie “Outsourced” last night. I thought it did a great job of bringing together some comedy while trying to portray the feelings many Americans have about outsourcing. I’d give it an A. See trailer below:

Painting... with light.
I bought a tripod today to go along with the new camera. I thought I’d have some fun with some light painting. I can photograph the guitar, now I just need to improve my playing. I’m hoping to get some outdoor photos this weekend. Check back soon for more pics… Today was the last day of classes. Not a big deal to me since I’m only taking one class, but it does make my...

New camera!
My new camera arrived in the mail yesterday and I’ve been quite excited about it. It’s a bit more complicated then you’re typical point-and-shoot camera, so it is going to take me awhile to get things figured out. I went out to the Gingerman last night and snapped a few photos. You can see on the left my favorite holiday libation and on the right the indecision caused by...

Beer Tour Europe, Summer 2008
This is long overdue. Ok, it wasn’t actually a beer tour, but after my friend and I were done with a conference in Germany we went to Belgium and sampled as many of the local brews as possible. Here’s an album of most of the beers we had in chronological order.

Happy Thanksgiving (to me!)
Melinda and I drove to Dallas for Thanksgiving. The food was all delicious. We’ve gone out to a few local places: The Old Monk and Buzz Brews. Both were really cool places. Today, we might check out a couple museums. Yesterday, we decided to venture out into the Black Friday madness. We really only had two items we were specifically looking for: Melinda wanted new boots and I wanted a new...
